What it means for Romania
Equality between men and women is one of the European Union’s objectives. Along the years, the legislation, the jurisprudence and the modifications of the treaties contributed at strengthening this principle and at its implementation in the EU. The European Parliament has always been a strong defender of the gender equality. Analysing the status of the adaptation of the Romanian laws to the acquis communautaire in the field of equality of chances, we can say that the Romanian legislation now covers the fundamental principles of the European community legislation, these principles being already transposed in the national legislation concerning the human rights.
Romania has a national strategy for the gender equality, aiming at responding through practical measures and activities to the problematic situations that have been identified along the years on some specific intervention directions, such as: education, labour market, social life, gender roles and stereotypes, participation at the decision making process. The strategy has been developed in the context of maintaining in the Romanian society of the gender-based discrimination and of gender-based differences concerning the access, the participation and the involvement on the labour market and the social, political, economical and cultural levels.

About the Global Goals
The Sustainable Development Goals – SDG, drafted by the United Nations, have been unanimously adopted by the 193 UN state leaders present at the UN Global Compact in New York, September 25th-27th. The 17 goals advanced to the international community for the next 15 years aim at ending extreme poverty, fighting inequality and injustice and fixing climate change. The objectives are global in themselves, but their success depends on the local and national implementation efforts and ther are expected to trigger a chain reaction in the business sector and at the level of the administrative and political decisions.
Romania values this event and was represented, for the first time in the last decade, at its highest level, by president Klaus Iohannis.
